News and Information
  • Read-a-thon is Monday, May 21. Your child can wear their pajamas to school. Please no slippers. They can also bring a stuffed animal to read with.
  • Spring Picture Reminders from Lifetouch are coming home today. These are for the picture packets that have not been purchased or returned. If you have any questions you may contact Lifetouch directly.
  • Field Day -  Tuesday, May 22nd. Please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and you put sunscreen on them BEFORE they come to school. First grade students will be bussed to the high school track. The kids will rotate to different stations as a class. We will all be leaving from the elementary at different times. Parents are more than welcome to meet us at the track.

Language Workshop
This week we worked on our tornado projects. Students used what they learned about tornadoes to make posters, books, or forecasts.
Math Workshop
This week we reviewed math skills that we learned throughout the year, such as adding and subtracting within 20.
Reading Workshop
This week we enjoyed reading outside and around the room. We also listened to stories and got to buddy read.
Next Week
Next week we will enjoy reading, field day, and other activities.

  • 4th Quarter Reading Challenge ends next friday, May 18. Keep reading!
Language Workshop
This week we continued learning about weather.  We read What is a Tornado?  and visited the FEMA shelter. We discussed what to do if we are at school and there is a tornado and what to do to stay safe if we are home and there is a tornado.  
Math Workshop
This week we learned how to tell time to the nearest hour and half hour. We also NWEA tested in math.
Reading Workshop
This week we focused on using non-fiction media to gather information about tornadoes for our weather projects.
We also NWEA tested in Reading.
Next Week
Next week we will begin our weather projects. We will also be finishing up our end of year assessments.

  • Class Pictures are also available for $2.  Please send in your money marked “class picture” and we will send home a picture with your child.

Language Workshop
This week we continued learning about weather.  We read “Freddy and the Terrible Tornado” and talked about how to be safe when severe weather happens.  We also practiced using commas in series.
Math Workshop
This week we completed Module 5 and took the assessment.  We learned about breaking shapes into equal groups, identifying, one-half and one-fourth, and decomposing shapes.  The kids really enjoys using Tangram pieces to solve puzzles and make pictures.
Reading Workshop
This week we focused on poetry.  We read poems about different types of weather and searched for the phonograms we have been learning about.
Next Week
Next week we will continue learning about weather.  In math we will learn about telling time. We will be NWEA testing so please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep!

Language Workshop
We made a list of things we already know about weather. Then we read Freddy the Frogcaster to learn more. We discussed weather clues and how they help us predict the weather. We learned about meteorologists and different weather tools, like a thermometer, barometer, and weather vane.
Math Workshop
This week we started Module 5: Identifying, Composing, and Partitioning Shapes. We have learned about corners and sides. We have also learned the names of shapes and their characteristics. The shapes we have focused on are circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, rhombuses, and hexagons.
Writing Workshop
We finished up our informative writing pieces. Students researched American Symbols and then used the writing process to publish their pieces. Some students finished and moved on to researching other topics of their choice.
Next Week
Next week we will continue learning about weather. We will also learn about commas in a series. In math, we will continue learning about shapes. In writing, we will start learning about poetry.

  • We have a new IXL question goal of 10,000 by May 15th. We answered 3,000 questions this week. We are off to a great start!

Language Workshop
We learned about the history of Clever this week. We took a walk on Thursday and learned about a civil war battle that took place about a mile south of our school.  Ask your student if they remember the name of the battle and how Clever got its name?
Math Workshop
This week we continued Math Module 4- Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 40. We have been working on adding 2 two-digit numbers. We are learning different strategies to use (number bonds, adding to make a 10, adding 10, and drawing quick tens). Your student has math homework this weekend.
Writing Workshop
We are continuing with informative writing. Students are writing about an American Symbol. We are working on expanding sentences to add more detail.
Next Week
Next week we will be creating posters about our community and learning about long ago vs. today. We will continue with our informative writing.  In math, we will finish up module 4 and test on Thursday.

  • BOGO Book Fair starts next week!   Our class will go on MONDAY during our library specials.  Money for book fair purchases needs to be in an envelope or ziplock baggie with your child’s name on it.

  • Our snack supply is still low. If you can help us out with some snacks we would appreciate it.

Language Workshop
We started learning about our community government. We discussed some of our laws and how they keep us safe. We continued learning about compound words, digraphs and blends.
Math Workshop
This week we continued Math Module 4- Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 40. We finished Topic C/D and assessed. Students have been learning how to use a tape diagram to add and subtract.
Writing Workshop
This week we started working on informative writing. Students have picked an American Symbol to write about. We are learning how to gather facts and create strong topic sentences.
Next Week
Next week we will continue learning about our community. We will continue our informative writing unit on American Symbols.  In math we will continue working with tens and ones.
