Language Workshop
Our focus this week was on President’s Day. We read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We identified main idea and key details in each book. We reviewed fiction and non-fiction and assessed on being able to identify the difference. We also practiced using prefixes and identifying the meaning of a word with a prefix.

Math Workshop
This week we learned about graphs. We learning how to collect data, make tally marks, and read the data in a graph. We practiced answering many questions about the data. We wrote number sentences to help us compare how many more and fewer. Today we assessed the last part of topic D.

Writing Workshop
This week we reviewed writing bold beginnings and excellent endings. We practiced adding these to an already writing narrative and opinion piece.

Next Week
Next week we will begin a unit on maps. We will switch from prefixes to suffixes. In math we will begin Topic 4. Topic 4 will focus on place value, comparing, and addition and subtraction to 40.

Next week the cafeteria is hosting a competition. The class that has the most kids eat school breakfast will earn a free Rice Krispy Treat and the class that has the most kids eat school lunch will earn a free slushie.

Language Workshop
Our focus this week was on economics. We read about and identified goods and services in our school and community. We talked about needs, wants and scarcity. This week we also learned about the prefixes -un and -re. We learned to use these prefixes to figure out the meaning of a word.

Math Workshop
Today we took our first assessment for Module 3 over measurement. We have been learning to compare and order items by length. We have also been practicing using centimeter cubes and rulers to measure.

Writing Workshop
It was the last week for our narrative writing unit. At this point, students should have published 2 pieces of narrative writing. Each piece should include a bold beginning, linking words (first, next, last) and an excellent ending.

Next Week
Next week we will learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will focus on the difference between fiction and non-fiction and review and test over prefixes. In math we will continue learning about measurement.

Valentine Party & Important Dates
Tomorrow is the last party of the school year!
Please make sure your student brings in valentines for everyone to
pass out during the party. Students will be making a valentines box
during the party. Home room parents will begin setting up the
classroom at 11:30. Other parents may arrive when the party starts
at 12:00. The party will end at 1:00.

Language Workshop
We continued our author study on Kevin Henkes. This week we read Sheila Rae the Brave and Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. We worked on identifying inflectional endings (-ed, -ing, and -s). We also used context clues to help us find the meaning of unknown words.

Math Workshop
This week we wrapped up Module 2. Students focused on making a ten for addition and taking from ten for subtraction. Then we reviewed solving addition and subtraction problems by using our favorite strategies. We took our assessment today.

Writing Workshop
We continued writing narratives. Students are working hard to add detail and use linking words in their stories. We have also been focusing on using bold beginnings and excellent endings.

Next Week
Next week we will finish our author study on Kevin Henkes In math, we will start Module 3 - Measurement and Graphing. In writing, we will finish narratives. In language, we will review and assess on inflectional endings and context clues.
