Language Workshop
This week we finished our author study of Eric Carle. We read the story The Greedy Python and The Honeybee and the Robber. We practiced asking and answering questions and retelling the story using key details. We also made up our own Eric Carle type story.

Math Workshop
We tested over Topic 2, “Understanding Subtraction.” We started centers during our math time, which includes fun games and hands-on learning. We took the pretest for Topic 3 which will begin next week.

Word Study
Next week we are reviewing the first grade sight words that we have covered so far. Here is a list of them: as, ask, add, an, go, get, his, has, had, man, men, no, plant, so, set, tan, tell, was, let, went, next. Be sure to practice these words at home!

Writing Worksthop
We continued the first step in the writing process, prewriting. We learned that when we prewrite we chose a topic and organize our thoughts. We have learned to use a four square and a web organizer. We also started introducing how to use a prewrite to make a draft. We will continue to work on proper capitalization, punctuation, and spacing in our writing.

Next Week
We will start learning about nouns. We will be sorting them as person, place, or thing. We will introduce poetry and read poems perfect for the season. Since it is fall, we would love to do something with apples. We are asking that everyone send in an apple sometime next week in order to make a special treat! In Math, we will start Topic 3: Five and Ten Relationships. In writing, we will continue to learn about prewriting and drafting.

Diggin Up Gold Fundraiser and EleMiddle Night at the Volleyball Game
September 29th: Diggin Up Gold and EleMiddle Night at the Volleyball game. Game time: 6:00.
September is childhood cancer awareness month, so in honor of this, we're hosting a Going Gold night on Thursday, September 29th during the High school volleyball game! We'll have food and desserts (bake sale items) and a silent auction going on in the HS commons area. We will also have a chance for you to win prizes by "buying" a VB player that night to serve for you during a heated competition in between games! This event is in honor of Lane Mendenhall (5th grader and son of our Para and bus driver, Sam Mendenhall). Come out and support Lane and Clever Lady Jay Volleyball. If you haven't been to a volleyball match yet this year, you are in for a real treat! Preschool- 8th grade students get in FREE and parents get 1/2 price admission ($1.50 ea.)

Language Workshop
This week we continued our author study of Eric Carle. We read the story Pancakes! Pancakes! Ask your child what all Jack had to do just to get a pancake for breakfast! We also learned that the setting of the story is where the story takes place. We are still working on capitalization and punctuation.

Math Workshop
We continued our study of Topic 2, “Understanding Subtraction.” We learned about subtracting to compare numbers and we solved many different subtraction story problems. Hopefully by now your child can correctly complete a number model and they know that when you write a subtraction sentence the WHOLE comes first! Whole-part=part

Word Study
Next week we will start working on “short e” words. Our words will be: get set tell men bed beg step felt help. Be sure to practice these words at home!

Writing Workshop
This week we learned to respond to a writing prompt. We are working hard to remember to use proper capitalization, punctuation, and spacing in our writing.

Next Week
We will continue our author study of Eric Carle. We will read the books The Grouchy Ladybug and Honeybee and the Robber. We will work on asking and answering questions and retelling. In Math we will continue working with subtraction. In writing, we will start learning ways to organize our writing and to write about 1 topic. Don’t forget to check your child’s folder daily for important papers coming home.

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16.
Don't forget, each week we will be having a spelling test. Please be sure to work with your child during the week to practice the words. The words that are bolded under the Word Study section are the words we will be working on this week. The reading challenge is still going on, so please be signing off on your child’s paper when they complete a reading task. The due date is Friday, October 14. Have a wonderful weekend!

Language Workshop
This week we started our author study of Eric Carle. We viewed his website and learned that he has written and illustrated many books. We started our author study by reading Walter the Baker. We learned that characters are the people and animals in a story. We have also been working on ending punctuation.

Math Workshop
We continued our study of Topic 2, “Understanding Subtraction.” We learned the missing parts of 9, created subtraction number sentences, and learned to solve subtraction stories. Please make sure to look over the math papers that your child is bringing home. There may be times they need to make corrections or have extra practice to complete.

Word Study
This week’s words were: as, ask, has, add, had, pan, lap, bag, jam, at. Next week’s words are: an, tan, man, plant, mad, hat, trap, and flag. Be sure to practice these words at home!

Writing Workshop
This week we wrote answers to questions in our journals. Next week we will continue writing answers to prompted questions.

We will continue our unit on characters with Eric Carle books, using punctuation correctly, and working with subtraction. In writing, we will continue to work on writing complete sentences. Don’t forget to check your child’s folder daily for important papers coming home.

News and Information
No School Monday! Enjoy your 3 day weekend! Grandparents Day will be from 2:30 to 4:00 on Friday, September 9. Grandparents are welcome to come in to see their grandchild’s classroom and meet their teacher.
The Reading Challenge for 1st Grade has started. If your child completes the reading challenge then they will get to participate in the Read-A-Thon. The challenge ends on October 14.

Language Workshop
This week we have continued our friendship unit as we read the book Enemy Pie. We worked on retelling using Beginning, Middle and End. We also practiced using capital letters for the beginning of a sentence, months, and days. In Reading, we have been practicing our reading strategies. (Think about the story, Look for parts you know, Stretch out the word)

Math Workshop
We finished Topic 1 “Addition” and moved into Topic 2 “Subtraction.” We have been working on finding the missing parts of 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Word Study
This week’s words were: no, so, go, was, his. Next week’s words are as, ask, has, add, had, pan, lap, bag, jam, at. Be sure to practice reading and writing these words at home!

This week we continued writing in our journals. We have been working on using capital letters correctly, spacing, and punctuation.
